European Choir Games Begin Today in Rīga

Grand Prix of Nations Rīga 2017 and the 3rd European Choir Games commence today at 8pm on 16th July, with the Opening Event for participants at the National Library of Latvia, once again transforming Rīga into the world’s choir music capital for a week.

After the outstanding success in organizing the World Choir Games in 2014, recognized as the most successful so far in the history of the event, Rīga gained the rights to hold the Grand Prix of Nations Rīga 2017 and the 3rd European Choir Games. This will provide the opportunity for Latvia to shine again on the world choir music map, strengthening the country’s international image, as well as showing our own unique cultural and choir singing traditions.

Latvia’s President Raimonds Vējonis, Rīga City Council Executive Director Juris Radzevičs and Günter Titsch, the President of the German INTERKULTUR Culture Organization will greet Games’ participants at the opening ceremony with speeches. After the formal addresses and the parade of member nations’ flags, choirs from the United Kingdom, China, Switzerland, Russia, South Africa and Denmark, each of which have arrived in Latvia with their folk song, will sing together with the choirs from Latvia. During the opening ceremony, the notes to these songs will be presented to the National Library of Latvia, symbolizing a cultural exchange and unifying people around the world. Participants at the ceremony will also be entertained by ethno-musician Kristīne Kārkle and composer Raimonds Tiguls. Uģis Brikmanis is the director of the Opening Event, with the artistic director being Romāns Vanags.

More than 150 choirs and 10,000 singers from throughout the world, representing 39 countries, will take part in the Games’ world class choir competitions, the Eurovision Choir of the Year 2017 Competition and the Introduction Concert Of Latvian Song And Dance Celebration. Choir competitions in ten different choir singing categories, outstanding world class conductors’ masterclasses, a participants’ parade, champions’ concerts and friendship concerts will take place within this framework at Rīga’s and Latvia’s most beautiful concert halls, churches, parks and squares. There will also be a range of free outdoor concerts in Rīga’s parks on existing and custom-built stages. Alongside the broad range of free concerts on offer, specially prepared concert programmes can also be heard at the Rīga Dome Cathedral and at Arēna Rīga.

The Grand Prix of Nations Rīga 2017 and the 3rd European Choir Games are being funded by the Rīga City Council and organized by the Rīga Tourism Development Bureau and the German Interkultur Culture Organization. More than 10,000 participants from Europe and the rest of the world will be gathering in Rīga during the event.
