Today, after a two year hiatus, the World Choir Game’s Peace Bell was rung once again and was placed on permanent display in the St. Peters Church’s exposition.
A bronze bell, weighing almost half a ton, was first rung in 2014 in Riga during the 8th World Choir Games. On it, one can find engraved the words “Kopā dziedāšana vieno tautas” (Singing unites people), reminding us that through singing we can foster understanding and peace amongst people and cultures from all over the world. The sounding of the Peace Bell is a symbolic message and an invitation to choirs all over the world to meet, next year, in Riga so that all may participate in the 3rd World Choir Games and the Grand Prix of Nations Riga 2017.
After the sounding of the Peace Bell, the Chairman of the Riga City Council Nils Usakovs, Riga Vice-Mayor Andirs Ameriks, the 3rd European Choir Games and the Grand Prix of Nations Riga 2017 project manager Diana Civle and the 3rd European Choir Games and the Grand Prix of Nations Riga 2017 artistic director Domans Vanags set free four white doves; symbolically sending a message to the four corners of the world inviting all to meet and sing next year in Riga.
The Peace Bell will be viewable to all Riga’s Festival visitors on August 12th to the 14th. We invite all of you to come and take a look, take a photo with it and share it with all of your FB friend by using #singinriga2017.
After the success of the World Choir Games in 2014 in Riga, the next 3rd European Choir Games and the Grand Prix of Nations Riga 2017 will take place in the summer of 2017 in Riga from 16th to the 23rd of July; once again singers from all over the world will gather in Latvia’s capital.
The World Choir Games is the largest world choir music festival, which from the 9th to the 19th of July, 2014 gathered 27,000 singers and 460 choirs from 73 countries and 5 continents. The World Choir Games goal is to unify choirs in a friendly competition and assure the importance of singing together.
